Mama Otter: A Picture of God’s Embrace

Like a baby content in its mother's arms, my soul is a baby content.

The thought of being held by God/Jesus brings me close to tears. My mother was not a nurturing person, which likely means her mother was not a nurturing person. If I look at the photo and imagine myself as the baby otter being held by its mother, I smile.

Kids Devotion: Hugs from God

God loves me. God loves you! That’s good news! But how does God love me? God has more good news. When we see how animal families take care of their little ones, we see how God loves us.

When I look at mama otter cuddle her baby as they float on the sea, I ask Jesus, “Do you love me like that?” And Jesus says, “Yes, I do! You are my little one. That’s how I love you!” When I am sad or scared or I just need some love, Jesus hugs me in my heart. That’s how God loves you, too. He is our snuggly God.

Activities for Kids & Kids at Heart:

  • Who is your favorite person, pet, or stuffed animal to hug? Give them the biggest, snuggliest hug ever! Take a photo and write a story.

  • Find a book or video about sea otters at the library. Find a rocking chair or put some big pillows on the floor and pretend you are sea otters floating on the ocean. Draw a picture or take a photo and write a story.

  • Ask Jesus to give you a hug in your heart and tell Him you love Him. That will make Him smile. Draw a picture and write a story.
